Day 12 - Baltic Jewels and the Midnight Sun: Sail the Norwegian Sea

Sail the Norwegian Sea – Wednesday, July 6

Our fifth "at sea" day today was generally rainy, but rather spectacular views of small hamlets on either side of the boat.  These tiny fishing villages generally have fewer than 300 inhabitants.  However, we have been repeatedly told that Norwegian fishermen are amongst the wealthiest people in Norway.  It is, as it has always been, a dangerous profession, but it is a profession that those who choose it feel passionate about.  I was reminded of a conversation I had with a young man at a high school in Maine whose entire family made a living by fishing.  His whole face lit up as he talked about the opportunity the school provides students to do internships/independent studies in fields they are passionate about.  He had chosen to learn more about aquaculture and fishing.  That must be a big part of why these families in Norway continue to return to their villages after their state provided education.

Goodnight from somewhere in the Norwegian Sea!
