National Championship on the Line, But Alas, Not for UCONN:
Baylor vs Notre Dame ~ April 7, 2019
What an amazing and exciting game! We spent the morning at the house and then took a walk down along the Hillsborough River.
Once again, we drove over to Ybor City to catch the street car into Tampa. Everywhere you look in Ybor, you find chickens -- mama hens, roosters, and baby chicks.
We walked into Centro Ybor to the Tampa Bay Brewing Company restaurant to grab some early dinner. Jeff had a burger and I got the Cubano Sandwich - both were quite good.
Jeff ended his meal with a slice of key lime pie. "Pretty presentation, but not very limey," was Jeff's pronouncement. I concur -- it tasted mostly like sweetened condensed milk.
End of the first quarter: Baylor 25 and Notre Dame 14. End of second quarter, Baylor 43, ND 31.
We are loving the way this game is going!
At the end of the third quarter, the score was Baylor 66 and Notre Dame 55. They also announced the first team All-Americans - including both Katie Lou and Napheesa from UCONN (the only team with two picks for the All-American Team. We are so proud of those two young women, who are also best friends and roommates (at least for another few weeks until graduation!
YIKES! Less than five minutes to go and Notre Dame has "poured it on." Meanwhile, Lauren Cox, Baylor's "big" guard injured her knee while going for a rebound, falling to the floor clutching her knee and screaming in pain. The trainer ran to her side, as did the Coach, Kim Mulkey. At just about the same time that Mulkey got to Lauren, some very rude, unsportsmanlike fan, yelled out, "Get her off the floor!" Mulkey looked up and gave that fan the most piercing glare. At the same time the entire arena (who had heard this) erupted in a loud BOOOOOOOO directed toward that fan. I hope he hears that sound for a very very long time. What a lout! Eventually, Lauren was taken off the court in a wheel chair.
Here we are with 28 seconds left i the game, with Baylor leading by 2 points! Notre Dame sinks a 2 pointer and ties it up.
But then, Baylor races down the court and sinks a 2 point shot to go ahead 82 to 80 with just under 4 seconds to play.
Unfortunately a Baylor player fouls Notre Dame's best player, sending her to the line for a pair of foul shots. I am thinking that Baylor is sunk -- the game will be tied and into overtime, and Baylor has had some serious foul troubles all night long -- no way they can win in overtime.
Miracle of miracles ... she missed the first foul shot. Her only hope now is to hit the front rim, get a rebound and sink a 2 pointer. Her second shot .... goes into the basket -- ballgame over! Baylor wins 82 to 81!
Pandemonium in the Amelie Arena as Baylor defeats Notre Dame (the second time this has happened to Notre Dame in the last 10 years. We are happy for Baylor, and get ourselves out of the arena while all the celebrating is taking place. We take the roundabout way to the street car (long story), but still end up getting a seat and making our way back to our car in Ybor City and thence "home" to our "Old Ola Bungalow."
Tomorrow the long drive to Savannah!
