Key West Memories: The Arrival ~ March 4, 2017
March 4, 2017
We left Fort Lauderdale shortly after breakfast at about 9:30 a.m. and headed south! As we hit "the Lower Keys" the drive took on a "honky tonk" feel reminiscent of childhood beach trips to Ocean Grove, Manasquan, and Metedoconk. I did not shoot any pictures, but this image from the Internet kind of sums it up. All that is missing is the signs blaring "4 tee shirts for $10"!
As we passed through Marathon Key, we knew we were getting closer to our destination. We stopped for lunch at a "Tiki Bar" and wondered, "what exactly IS a 'tiki bar'?" I had a great salad, and Jeff had a grilled cheese sandwich, and we were on our way.
We both enjoyed traversing the causeway - seven mile bridge! What magnificent vistas we had! The sea is quite green, in contrast to the turquoise of the Bermuda sea. Beautiful for sure, though! Shortly before we arrived we heard from Peter and Betty Lou that they had successfully transferred their "stuff" from the cottage they had rented for the two weeks before we got here to our pied a terre. Peter had rented a car for a couple of days and was returning it to Enterprise. So we arranged to pick him up and head to the cottage together.
Our cottage is in the "Shipyard Condos" development within the area known as the "Truman Annex." It is quite close to the waterfront (although we cannot see the water from the condo," and it is one block off of the infamous Duval Street. From my bedroom window each evening I can hear music -- not unpleasant or raucous; more like blue grass. Our bedroom is at the front of the house and is, I think, a bit noisier than the "master" where Peter and Betty Lou are sleeping (although, the trade off of having a window that I can open at night is a definite boon in my book).
The front door opens to a small foyer with a flight of stairs up to the second floor (a separate "cottage" -- our friend, Peter, doesn't like to think of these as "condos"). And then there is the entrance to our own cottage, "Rooster Retreat."
Rooster Retreat is aptly named, for anyone who has been to Key West knows that chickens and roosters rule the ... well "roost". They are absolutely EVERYWHERE! We have had to chase them away from our doorway as a couple of the neighborhood brood were very curious about our place!
It is a tidy little place. As you walk in, there is a closet and a stacked washer/dryer unit on the left. A small "galley kitchen" (barely big enough for 2 people to work in) is to the left, and a small living room completes that part of the house.
French doors open to a lovely and private patio, which has become our principal hangout both for meals and for afternoon relaxation.
